Rose Gardening Tools - Basic tools to get your work done

Gardening is much easier and more fun if you have the right tools. The following basic tools will help you get your work done, but while you are cutting, raking and planting, don’t forget to stop and smell the roses!

Shovels

Pick a durable long handled shovel. It should be light and comfortable to grip. Buying a shovel with a padded handle may cost a little more money now, but will save you many blisters over the years.

Pruners

A good rose pruner is one tool that is usually used daily in maintaining your garden. There are two types of pruners available on the market. The "anvil pruner" has a pair of blades that meet on top of each other. The other type which is the "bypass" pruner has blades that overlap each other just like the scissors. It is advisable that you should use the bypass pruner since it would not crush the plant’s canes and stems.

Digging Forks

An essential tool for loosening, turning and lifting soil in small gardens is a short garden digging fork. Look for quality tool with steel prongs and a tough, strong handle.

Loppers

For gardeners with mature gardens that have lots of old canes that are too thick for pruning shears, a lopper can be an indispensable tool. However, if you are new to rose gardening, you should probably hold off for a few years before purchasing a lopper.

Gloves

Good gloves are critical for rose gardening. Unless you want your gardening experience to be ruined by thorn pricks, you should use heavy-duty leather work gloves with large, fold-down cuffs.

Rakes

Rakes are necessary to rake away any clipping, leaves or other debris. You may want to purchase both a regular and child size rake to help you get into those small places.

Rose gardening tools are easily available from stores, such as your local garden supply store. If you are on a budget, don’t forget that you can also pick up second-hand tools and other garden supplies from area yard sales.
